A Brief History
The Mountain Institute (TMI) was founded in 1972 at the Spruce Knob Mountain
Center in Pendleton County West Virginia. Since then it has evolved significantly
and diversified its programs under the leadership of many gifted visionaries.
A more substantial, narrative history is in development, with contributions
from some of the organization's founders. When completed it will be
published on this page. Until then we invite you to peruse panels of
a 'timeline' poster created for TMI's
25th anniversary celebration in 1997. Click on any of the jpeg images
